How to File for Homestead Exemption in Florida

What is a Homestead Exemption?

The homestead exemption in Florida can reduce the taxable value of your property by up to $50,000, providing significant savings on your property taxes. To qualify, the property must be your permanent residence as of January 1st of the tax year.


Steps to Apply:

1. Check Eligibility: You must own and occupy the home as your primary residence as of January 1st.

2. Gather Documents: You most likely will need:

  • A valid Florida driver’s license or ID card
  • A Florida vehicle registration (if applicable)
  • Proof of residency (utility bill, voter registration, etc.)
  • Social Security numbers for all applicants
  • It also helps to have a copy of your recorded warranty deed handy

4. Deadline: Applications are due by March 1st of the tax year.
